Greg Luscombe became principal trombone of the Memphis Symphony in 1989 after successfully winning a nationally advertised audition for the position. A native of the Chicago, Illinois area,  Greg lived in the Cleveland, Ohio area for seven years prior to joining the Memphis Symphony. In Cleveland he was a member of the Ohio Chamber Orchestra which at the time was also  the orchestra for the Cleveland Ballet and Opera companies.  In addition to playing with the chamber orchestra he  was the  principal trombonist of the Canton(Ohio) Symphony Orchestra for five years. While in Cleveland,  Greg performed in a wide variety of styles and genres  which included orchestral playing, jingle recordings, theatre productions, big band jobs and summer band concerts on Euphonium including the Blossom Festival Concert Band.

With the Memphis Symphony Greg has been the soloist on three different sets of  Masterworks Series Concerts and on three different Pop Series programs. In Oct. 2019 he performed  the Shilkret Trombone Concerto(written for Tommy Dorsey). He has also performed the Tomasi Trombone Concerto and the Rimsky-Korsakoff Trombone Concerto with the MSO.  Greg has also been a guest recitalist at the International Trombone Festival, the Eastern Trombone Workshop and has given recitals and masterclasses at various universities, colleges and high schools including the University of Northern Alabama, Henderson State University, Union University, The University of Mississippi, the University of Memphis, the University of Akron and Allegheny College. He continues to be very active an an independent private low brass teacher and teaches students of all ages, abilities and interests. Many have done very well in various competitions over the years and some have gone on to have outstanding professional careers.

Greg performs on occasion with other orchestras as a  substitute or extra  player  which has included The Chicago Symphony, The Cleveland Orchestra,, The Saint Louis Symphony, The Chicago Sinfonietta, The Mississippi Symphony, The Mexico City Philharmonic, The Jackson Symphony Orchestra, The Iris Orchestra and the South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Greg continues to be active in a variety of  musical work outside of orchestral playing and in addition to performing he is known widely in the Memphis and Mid-South area for his work as  a musician contractor. He has contracted musicians for various major events and entertainers at major venues throughout the Mid South Region. One of the highlights of his contracting included booking musicians for the 2017 Symphonic Elvis National tour. In addition he contracts musicians for many churches in the Memphis and the Mid-South area for a wide variety of services. One of the bigger events he contracted included an orchestra he contracted for the Magnificat organization from France which included a national television broadcast of a Mass given at the Cannon Center in Memphis. 

Greg has a MM(music) degree in performance and a BS in business administration. His private trombone teachers have included Jay Friedman(principal trombone, Chicago Symphony), Per Brevig(former principal of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Mr. Ed Zadrosny(Univ. of Akron, Philadelphia Orchestra),Art Sares(former top freelance/studio player in Chicago), Dee Stewart(former professor at Indiana University and Philadelphia Orchestra),  and his father Fred Luscombe. He has also done some graduate study in music at Indiana University, North Texas State University and the University of Memphis.

Greg's interests includes competitive swimming and road races as time permits. He competes in sanctioned U.S. Masters Swimming events and qualified for  and competed  in the National Senior Games(Albuquerque 2019). Recently at 2021 Tn. State Finals for the the Senior Games he placed in top three in his age group in 5 of 6 events placing 1st in the 500 free. He also completed several marathons.

He is married to Beth who is a member of Memphis Symphony viola section and they have two  daughters and a son-in-law.
